Are you a Trimtabist?
A trim tab is the small rudder on the big rudder: nobody can push a loaded ship,
so you push the tab, the tab turns the rudder, the rudder turns the ship. A Trimtabist
applies that to thinking: the right question forces the right number into existence, and a
number that survives every attempt to kill it cannot be unseen. Question → number →
change. The board below is where the questions live — each one asked of
the ledger through someone’s own AI, re-verified by hand, and printed
permanently with the asker’s name. Discussion happens on LinkedIn, where each engagement
links its thread. Fuller’s epitaph: “Call me Trimtab.”

Is America actually importing less, or does it just feel that way?
The import bill fell $102B in a year — but the cargo fell only 3.5%. $72B of the fall is the same goods declaring less value, and …

Did America's ports really go 24/7 after the White House announcement?
No. Night-time berthing at LA/Long Beach: 36.0% before the policy, 34.0% after — while five untreated gateways sat at exactly 30.1…

The famous 109-ship queue “disappeared” in January 2022. Did it?
No — it was hidden. Anchorage hours collapsed 25,045 → 5,496 while anchor stays hit a record 863; dwell fell 57h → 6.4h per stay. …

Questions the ledger cannot answer
A live instrument has edges, and printing them is worth
more than pretending otherwise:
“Which shipping line is most reliable?”
Only four carriers have enough observed ships for an honest number; thin cells once produced a dramatic spread that was pure artifact. Declined until powered.
“How many TEU is that?”
TEU here is modelled (gross tonnage ÷ 11) and is never quotable as a measurement. We publish weight, which is counted.
“Are the boxes going back empty?”
The AIS draft field is set by crews and rarely updated — we probed 65,000 stays and killed the method. No instrument we trust measures this yet.
“Where is this ship right now, mid-Pacific?”
Terrestrial AIS reaches ~200 nautical miles offshore. Mid-ocean is not covered, and we do not fill the gap with a model.
“What about air freight, or trucks from Mexico?”
Containerised seaborne imports through 8 gateways — a defined slice, stated on every page. Other modes are outside the instrument.
“What were imports like in 2012?”
The pre-2017 backfill is not loaded, and serving a partial year against full years manufactures trends. The series is withdrawn until complete.
How the loop works
1 · Connect the
ledger to your own Claude or ChatGPT (two clicks, no key). 2 · Ask the question
you always suspected had a real answer — your AI pulls the data and charts it in the house
style. 3 · When it lands, your assistant will offer to draft the LinkedIn post
from your own numbers; post it with #Trimtabist, tagging
Mrigank Singh — the
hashtag is how submissions are found, every Monday, without exception.
4 · The best engagement each week takes the open slot — your name, your
question, permanent. Re-running anyone else’s question above in your own AI is encouraged:
checking each other’s work is the whole culture.
Curation bar: answerable from the ledger, survives re-verification, and plausibly
changes a conversation. Pretty charts with wrong numbers are declined, with the reason.
